Things To Consider While Buying a Waterproof Tent

Waterproof Tents

A few essential things are there which you have to consider before purchasing the best tents for rain.

Tent fabric ratings: Mostly, you can find tents made of polyester fabric, which is not Waterproof. Therefore, you need to apply a PU (Polyurethane) coating to offer ‘waterproofness.’ You can measure the hydrostatic head to know how waterproof the fabric is, and the measurement ranges from 800mm up to 10,000mm.

However, no international standard of Waterproof rating is there that you should follow. But still, if you want to know the specific rating, go with 1500mm, and it is the minimum rating to be deemed waterproof. Besides, you can use it in most rain conditions.

If you have a tent with a 1500mm rated fly, the fabric can hold up a 1500mm high column of water for sixty seconds before a drop of water seeps through.

Seams and stitching: Ensure that the tent material has been stitched together. If you buy a transparent ‘tape’ which you have applied using heat, it must cover all stitched seams and places like toggles or attachment points.

Floors and Groundsheets (and Footprints):

It would help if you chose a hardy tent floor. The reason is that you will sit, lie on it, etc. If you are willing, choose Polyester and Nylon floors. These are usually thicker and have higher mm ratings ranging from 1500mm to 10,000mm. In addition, you can use floors of Waterproof non-breathable PE (polyethylene) and heavy-duty PVC.

How To Waterproof Our Old Tent

If you are out in the wilderness, the sound of nature that you must not want to hear is water dripping inside the tent. Whether you have been there for a long time, you have to shore up the waterproofness of your shelter. Want to know how to waterproof a tent?

Three ways are there through which you can waterproof your tent.

Seal the seams: If you apply seam sealer, it can help you to keep moisture from seeping through.

Refresh the urethane coating: You can use the urethane coatings on the inside of the rainfly and the tent’s floor as barriers to protect against moisture.

Refresh the DWR: You can take the help of a durable water repellent (DWR) coating for your rainfly shed water.

Sealing Tent Seams:

Several tents are available with seams that are sealed. But the sealant will wear out over time due to which the water leaks through it.

Whether you see a leaky seam, it is something you want to have:

  • A rag
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Seam sealer ( ensure that you have the right type for your tent. Using Silicone-treated fabric, you can see it using a different sealer than polyurethane-coated fabrics.
In most cases, tents use polyurethane-coated fabrics. But whether you do not know what type of fabric you have, you can check with your tent manufacturer).
  • You should drop cloth to contain spills though it is optional.
The process of sealing seams is as follows:
  • Your first task is to set it up in a dry, sunny spot or brightly lit room to test the seams. After that, your job is to sell them on the underside of the fly and the tent body’s inner side. Thus, it can help you put the fly on inside out to access the seams.
  • Whether you see any seam tape coming loose on the underside of the fly, you need to remove the peeling sections. But make sure that you are leaving the entire section in place.
  • Clean the seams gently to prep these with a rag and rubbing alcohol.
  • Now, you should apply the new sealer to the seams.
  • Whether a seam starts failing, the rest will follow it. Therefore, you can prefer to apply seam sealer to all the seams.
  • Let it dry completely.
Refreshing the Urethane Coating on a Tent

Have you seen any stuff flaking off of the inside of rainfly or on the floor of your tent? If yes, you should apply a new urethane coating.

These are the things you need.
  • A sponge with an abrasive side
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Tent sealant ( ensure that you have the right type for your tent. Using Silicone-treated fabric, you can see it using a different sealer, not polyurethane-coated fabrics.
In most cases, tents use polyurethane-coated fabrics. But whether you do not know what type of fabric you have, you can check with your tent manufacturer.)
How you need to apply the tent sealant is as follows:
  • First, your task is to lay the rainfly & tent floor in a flat position. After that, you need to scrub off the flaking coating gently with rubbing alcohol and your sponge.
  • Next, you have to use a thin coating of the new sealant and apply it to your entire fly or tent floor. In this case, your task is to follow the directions on the sealant bottle.
  • After that, you have to allow the new coating to dry for at least 24 hours before packing the tent away.
  • Finally, your job is to wash your hands to remove sealant and coated tent fabrics.
Refreshing the DWR on a Tent:

Whether rain doesn’t beat up your fly anymore, your job is to refresh the durable water repellent (DWR) coating.

These are the things required of you.
  • A spray-on water-repellent product
  • A clean, damp cloth
  • Water
You have to go through the process to refresh the DWR on a Tent.
  • First, set your tent up and spray the rainfly down with clean water. However, you don’t need to dry before applying a new DWR coating if you have recently cleaned your tent.
  • After that, you should apply the spray evenly over the exterior of the rainfly.
  • Wait for a few minutes, and then take the damp cloth. Now, your job is to wipe off any excess coating.
  • Allow your tent to dry entirely before packing it away.

So, we hope that now you have understood how to waterproof a tent cheaply.
